The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue
As any major honors show nears, there’s always an outcry for the addition of new categories to recognize unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely that year
- Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences globally and have been for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
