Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Claims Maiden Title in Over Two Years
19 of the Russian's twenty-one championships have been earned on hard surfaces
A resurgent Daniil Medvedev secured his maiden trophy for 882 days with a win over Corentin Moutet in the tournament final.
The athlete, a ex- number one, has experienced a torrid period, winning just one win at the major tournaments and experiencing a meltdown at the US Open.
His inconsistency on the professional circuit - and struggles with his service game in particular - resulted in him exiting of the world's top 10 and eventually separating with long-term mentor Gilles Cervara.
Presently working with Johansson and Goetzke, the tennis star has consistently progressed in the recent weeks - culminating in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over Frenchman Moutet.
This marks the player's first trophy following the 2023 Rome Masters and initial on a hard court since that period of 2023.
Success also signifies Medvedev has achieved 21 championships at twenty-one distinct competitions.
"For the first time I am participating in a competition with my children at once, so to win a trophy is especially meaningful," stated world number 14 Medvedev.
"This victory is in dedication of my younger daughter Victoria, because the initial championship I achieved when my older daughter her name was delivered was for her."
Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his past six championship matches, featuring in Halle in the past months.
The player's retrieving strategy and frequent reactions on the playing surface had led commentators to wonder if his ability to perform at the highest level was concluded.
However the player has altered his approach in the last few weeks, attempting to come to the net and play assertively, supported by an enhanced serving game.
He recovered from a deficit in the opening set against the tricky Frenchman, taking four of the concluding five games to go ahead.
The pair swapped break points in the second set before the challenger, bidding for his first professional victory, gained dominance to create a final set.
The opponent saved 4 early opportunities in a tight final set before the Russian secured a break to that score to close out the victory.
Suitably, Medvedev secured the win with a point at the net area, with Moutet failing to manage a return after over two and a half hours.
