'Candy game'

The legal representative, prosecuting, detailed the criminal behavior to the court.

She stated his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were participating in a summer camp which he ran.

The defendant played a "treat game" with the minors, the prosecutor stated, in which he would go into the children's bedrooms when they were preparing to sleep and request they to eat sweets "rapidly".

She told the court the defendant had conducted this practice with the boys "repeatedly", and children had earlier experienced illness the following morning.

She said the defendant had been able to explain this for many years as the children being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepson had suspicions in July 2025.

The legal representative added: "Recently" his stepchild had worries about the situation, justifiably.

"They decided to examine in the individual's items."

Mrs Prior KC said items including infant oil, Vaseline and syringes were located, and his stepchild alerted the law enforcement about his suspicions.

She said Ruben proceeded to conduct the "treat game" with six youngsters that evening - that Saturday - and they were all ill the following morning.

"Law enforcement" had not arrived by that stage," she stated further.

The police watchdog, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was investigating the police response of the situation.

Mrs Prior explained the minors were having difficulty walking due to being ill, so the family member contacted the law enforcement once more.

She said the man then conducted the "candy game" in a space of five children.
